Philly police officer arrested in string of alleged domestic incidents

Philadelphia police have arrested and dismissed a 17-year veteran after he surrendered himself in connection to a series of alleged domestic incidents, the department announced Wednesday.

Authorities said 51-year-old Gerald Smith turned himself into the Internal Affairs Unit after the department completed an investigation into the alleged incidents, details of which were not disclosed.

An affidavit of probable cause was prepared and Smith was charged with three counts of simple assault and endangering the welfare of another person, one count of terroristic threats and violation of protection order.

Smith had been assigned to the 39th District.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross has suspended Gerald Smith for 30 days with the intent to dismiss at the end of the 30 days.
