A Philadelphia police officer is back on the job nearly three years after he was shot while on duty.

In a Facebook post Monday, the Philadelphia Police Department said Officer Ed Davies was returning to work after being struck at close range during a violent incident in Feltonville:

993 days ago, Officer Ed Davies was shot at close-range while on duty. Today, after a long and difficult journey, he returns to work.

Welcome back, Officer Davies - the department and the citizens of the great city of Philadelphia couldn't be happier to see you back in blue. #‎StandWithDavies

Davies was shot while trying to subdue Eric Torres at a convenience store at Fourth and Annsbury streets on Aug. 13, 2013, after police said Torres fled a traffic stop, according to NBC10.

Police said Torres fired his stolen .45-caliber Glock, striking Davies. The officer spent more than a month in a coma, underwent several surgeries and had a kidney removed as a result.

Torres was found guilty of aggravated assault and sentenced to 66-132 years in prison last year.

Davies returns to the department as a member of the Advanced Training Unit at the Police Academy, a department spokesperson told NBC10.
