The slang word jawn recently achieved a certain level of respectability in the eyes of the dictionary editors at Merriam-Webster, who said that its origins and prevalent usage make it worthy of consideration for an entry some day.

Although the word probably gives area high school English teachers migraines, one Philly public school is celebrating jawn with holiday gifts for your Christmas tree and ears.

The Workshop School, a West Philly public school dedicated to creative technical education, has a shop full of wood-cut jawn ornaments and earrings available for purchase online. A Christmas take on the LOVE statue and other earring patterns also are featured on the students' site.

The process behind the ornaments is explained by sophomore Michael Best in the video below.

Proceeds from all purchases support the Workshop Industries Foundation, which directs money to resources and programming to benefit the projects of current and future students.

It's always a good idea to keep a well-rounded ornament collection. For $4, you can support local students and have an annual reminder why you love where you live during the holidays.
