The Phillies have signed right-hander Kevin Correia to a Major League contract, Senior Vice President & General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced Monday via the following statement:
Correia, 34, spent the first two months of the 2015 season pitching for Sacramento, the triple-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. He went 0-1 with a 3.58 ERA in six starts for the Rivercats with a 1.19 WHIP (34 H, 11 BB) and 25 strikeouts in 37.2 innings. In his final start with the team, he pitched 7.0 scoreless innings against the Nashville Sounds. Correia was released on May 29 after exercising an opt-out clause in his contract.
“Kevin fills a need by adding depth, durability and experience to our pitching staff,” said Amaro. “We hope that he can give us quality innings to take some heat off the bullpen.”
For his career, Correia is 76-95 with a 4.59 ERA in 353 games (216 starts) for the Giants (2003-08), San Diego Padres (2009-10), Pittsburgh Pirates (2011-12), Minnesota Twins (2013-14) and Los Angeles Dodgers (2014). He was originally selected in the 4th round of the June 2002 draft by the Giants out of Cal Poly San Louis Obispo.
Correia, who is expected to join the club in Cincinnati, will wear No. 28.
