The Phillies 40-man roster now stands at 40 players after the team announced they have claimed outfielder Jordan Danks off waivers from the White Sox.
The left-handed hitting Danks played in 51 games Chicago last season and had a pair of home runs and 10 RBI to go with his .222 average. In his 93 games for triple-A Charlotte, he hit .270 with 18 doubles, 16 home runs and 57 RBI.
"Jordan is a player whose power and outfield defense appealed to us," said GM Ruben Amaro, Jr. said in a statement. "We've been looking for athletes and guys who can play defense and Jordan is both. His athleticism was important and he will be part of the outfield mix in spring training with the possibility of making our major league club. Much like our starting pitching, we are creating depth in the outfield, especially with regards to defense."
Taken in the seventh round of the 2008 draft, Danks, 28, played college ball at the University of Texas and has appeared in 180 career major league games, all for the White Sox. In his career, he has hit .227 with eight home runs and 26 RBI.
He is the younger brother of John Danks, a pitcher for the White Sox.
The Phillies also signed outfielders Ben Revere and Domonic Brown to one-year deals, avoiding arbitration.
