Philadelphia's Thanksgiving Day Parade returns for its 97th year

Here's what you need to know before the big day

Philadelphia hosts the oldest Thanksgiving parade in the country. As the annual parade gets closer to the 100-year mark, it also gets bigger and better. This family-friendly event has become a tradition for many, who either watch it on TV at 6ABC or head to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway to view floats, giant balloons and special guest appearances.

Need-To-Know

• Thursday, Nov. 24
• Beginning at 8:30 a.m. at 20th Street and JFK Boulevard
• Majority of the parade takes place on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway
• Ends at noon at the Philadelphia Museum of Art
• Follows a 1.4-mile parade route
• Free to attend
• 2016 marks the parade's 97th year

Floats & Balloons

Look out for Geico's "Under the Sea" float, A.C. Moore Arts & Crafts' "The Enchanted Winterland" float, Five Below's "The Grinch" balloon, NRG Energy's "Pirate Ship" float, La-Z-Boy's "Daniel Tiger" balloon, Dunkin' Donuts' "Very Hungry Caterpillar" balloon and more characters and fantastical displays among the floats and giant balloons.

The 2016 Parade Zone

The Parade Zone is a festival at Eakins Oval. There will be selfie stations, free coffee samples, giveaways, a kids' activity area, live ice sculpting and other family-friendly activities.

Those looking for other spots to watch the parade should check out Visit Philly's interactive parade route map, which highlights the best places to cheer on the floats and balloons.
