Philadelphia is still the fifth-most populated city in the United States, according to the United States Census Bureau.

The agency released the estimates Thursday on its website.

Philadelphia gained approximately 7,145 inhabitants last year to remain in the top five as the city's population increased from 1,560,297 in 2014 to 1,567,442 in 2015.

The city's top-five ranking, which it has held since 2007, may be short-lived as Phoenix appears poised to overtake Philly once again.

Phoenix enjoyed the fifth-highest population increase last year, behind New York City, Houston, Los Angeles and San Antonio. Phoenix's population grew by 24,614 people to a total of 1,563,025 to remain the sixth-most populous city.

A total of 10 cities boast populations of more than 1 million people, according to the Census Bureau:

  1. New York City: 8,550,405
  2. Los Angeles: 3,971,883
  3. Chicago: 2,720,546
