Philadelphia may soon get another Target store, a recent court filing obtained by Philly.com suggests.
The filing has to do with the development of Lincoln Square, a multi-use complex at the corner of South Broad Street and Washington Avenue in South Philadelphia that would consist of apartments, retail space and a three-story parking garage. A supermarket of some kind has also been rumored to be part of the plans.
According to the report, Target Corp. is looking to put one of its “flexible-format"-style stores, which are pretty much the same as its traditional big-box locations, but condensed, in the building.
If the plan comes to fruition, it would be the fifth "flexible-format" Target in Philadelphia, with two already operating in Center City and two more currently under development in Fairmount and Upper Roxborough.
“With a Broad and Washington store, Target apparently hopes to serve increasingly affluent nearby neighborhoods such as Graduate Hospital and Passyunk Square that are outside easy shopping range of South Philadelphia's big-box retail districts near the Schuylkill and the Delaware River, Jacob Cooper, a managing director with brokerage MSC Retail in Philadelphia, told Philly.com.
The project could begin construction in March 2017.
