A Target store in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, will dim its store lights, turn off the overhead music and ask its staff to be passive toward its customers for a two-hour window on Saturday to create a sensory-friendly shopping experience for people on the autism spectrum, The Mighty reports.
The store's quiet hours will take place from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. on Dec. 10. People with autism often have trouble coping with overstimulation, which can be caused by loud noises, long lines and crowds and can turn an already hectic holiday shopping trip into a nightmare.
Free Starbucks coffee will also be given out to adults during the event hours.
A Target spokesperson told The Mighty that the employees at this specific store location worked with the local community to create the event based on demand. There are no other events planned at different locations at this time.
