PennDOT is blaming a vendor for processing an undetermined number of driver's licenses that lack a security feature.
Saying it learned of the issue Wednesday, the agency said laminate supplied by vendors did not have the proper security image, which is only visible by use of black light .
Licenses may have been printed with the incorrect laminate since November, PennDOT said.
Those who were issued improper driver's licenses will be mailed a free replacement promptly and are asked to destroy the original license.
“Because of the flawed security feature, the original license may not be accepted as proof of identification when scanned by black light devices," PennDOT said in a statement. “However, this issue should not impact security checks by the Transportation Security Administration at airports since TSA references a different security feature on the license or identification card in its verification process."
