The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission voted Tuesday to raise the speed limit on significant stretches of the state highway.
According to Philly.com, sections of the Turnpike that currently have a 65-mph limit will be bumped to a 70-mph limit.
The change is expected to go into effect this spring. An exact date hasn't yet been announced.
Areas of the Turnpike currently with a speed limit of 55 mph – which includes parts of Southeastern Pennsylvania near the Mid-County and Neshaminy Falls toll plazas, as well as construction zones – are expected to remain as is.
Before deciding to raise the speed limit, the commission led a trial study, which found “no significant, even perceptible, increases in average speed and crash rates," Philly.com reports.
