Two students at Central Bucks High School South were ecstatic last Friday after learning that their classmates had voted them 2015 Homecoming King and Queen.
That designation would make any high school student proud, but it was particularly special for Nick McGee and Lily Bowman because both seniors have Down syndrome, Today reports.
"There's probably a thousand different reasons why they were chosen in a class of over 600 students," said Scott Davidheiser, principal of Central Bucks High School South, where the two students are active members of the student body. "I think everything's reciprocal in life."
A video of the announcement on Friday night went viral after McGee, a drummer, bounded for the bleachers in celebration and gave his good friend Bowman a hug.
Principal Davidheiser said the school has received a "tremendous" outpouring of support and attention since last week's crowning.
"It just shines light on the importance of caring for kids, and the way kids care for kids," he said. "Schools are built for academic success, obviously, but we know a lot of things go into making success possible."
The response to the story on social media has been overwhelmingly positive as the school and study body continue to receive praise for the gesture.
