In 'Turandot,' a princess must try to open her heart to love

"Turandot" at the Academy of Music will premier during Opera Philadelphia's 2016-2017 season.

UPDATE Friday, Sept. 30 at 3:42 p.m.: Opera on the Mall is rescheduled for Sunday, Oct. 2.


Opera on the Mall returns Oct. 1 for its sixth year. Outside Independence Hall, Philadelphians are invited to experience Opera Philadelphia for free. This year "Turandot" will be broadcast in HD on the big screen.

The opera will first be shown at the Academy of Music, beginning Sept. 23, as part of Opera Philadelphia's fall season

In "Turandot," which will be performed in Italian with music by the famous Giacomo Puccini, a princess asks her suitors to answer riddles. If they get them wrong, they die. When one suitor passes her test, she must try to open her heart to love.

Attendees to Opera on the Mall are asked to bring blankets or chairs for the performance. Packing a picnic is also encouraged. 

Tickets to the event are free but registration is required.
