Until March 29 the four-acre conservatory at Kennett Square's
Longwood Gardens will be filled with orchids for the
Orchid Extravaganza. The exhibit includes almost 5,000 orchid blooms of all kinds, including orchid baskets (their biggest ever) and the popular orchid meadow.
With their delicate beauty and exotic origins, orchids have long been an obsession that brings horticulturists and casual flower lovers together.
Though there are just two weeks left to see this stunner of an exhibit, March is a great time to visit because that's when rare sky-blue poppies are in bloom at the gardens, too. In addition to the orchids and poppies, Amaryllis, Canterbury-bells and Winter Red-hot-pokers are in season at Longwood.
Also open through March 29, is a special
photographic display in the Visitor Center. The historic Delaware Photographic Society has gathered images of the Longwood Gardens orchid collection to display along with the Extravaganza.
