With holiday shopping season upon us, one Main Line neighborhood is giving shoppers the chance to double their spending power at local businesses.
Ardmore, which is home to the sprawling, upscale outdoor mall at Suburban Square and a number of independent businesses, including the long-running McCloskey’s Tavern and hip movie rental shop Viva Video, marked the return of its Downtown Dollars program this week.

The program first started when bad weather and construction started to hurt neighboring businesses several years ago. Construction projects monopolizing Ardmore in the last few years include the assembly of a massive parking lot in Suburban Square and a multi-use Dranoff Properties project cutting off what was once one of the area's key parking options.
The Philadelphia Business Journal reported the goal of the returned Downtown Dollars program is to bring an extra $30,000 into the local business economy of Ardmore.
Now through Dec. 3, interested shoppers can enter the Downtown Dollars lottery and, if selected, can purchase gift cards from $25 to $100 and receive a second Downtown Dollars gift card of the same amount, effectively doubling their spending power.
The Ardmore Initiative received a grant from One Ardmore Place to help put the reward system into action, releasing a total $15,000 in Downtown Dollars. Gift cards last for 90 days.
