Mayor Michael Nutter is proposing to increase property taxes for Philadelphia homeowners by 9.43 percent in an attempt to fund the city's school system, according to media reports.

His proposal comes one day after Gov. Tom Wolf called for lowering school property taxes by $3.8 billion, a reduction funded in part by proposed increases to the state's income taxes. Wolf estimated the relief could bring a 50 percent average reduction to homeowners.

Nutter's proposal would increase the city's property tax rate to 1.465 percent, according to NBC Philadelphia. Despite the increase, Nutter administration officials told NBC that city residents will still have their taxes reduced, thanks to Wolf's plan.

Nutter is scheduled to deliver his annual budget address to the city council Thursday. Other budget items include spending $3.6 million for police body cameras and equipment, according to Philly.com.
