In a meeting Wednesday before about 100 members of the New Jersey Gasoline-Convenience-Automotive Association, New Jersey Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno said that raising the state’s minimum wage to $15 per hour would mean New Jersey residents and visitors might have to pump their own gas, NorthJersey.com reports.

“You go to $15 minimum wage, you’re not going to be able to hire that high school kid, or that senior citizen, or that person who is here trying to move here from out of the country,” Guadagno reportedly told the group.
Guadagno, New Jersey’s first lieutenant governor and the second-in-command to Gov. Chris Christie, has been said to be one of the Republicans eyeing her boss’ job. Her remarks on the wage issue align with those of Christie, whose term ends in 2018 and who vetoed a $15-an-hour minimum wage hike in August.
The minimum wage is also likely to figure prominently in the next gubernatorial election as Democratic leaders, including two running for state governor in 2017, Phil Murphy and John Wisniewski, have already begun advocating for a wage increase.
