Iceboating generally uses sailboats fitted with skis or runners that glide across the ice.

For some, February's extreme cold has been a daily menace with a nasty bite. For others, it's an opportunity to take the boat out on the bay.

6 ABC reports that iceboaters have taken to Ocean County, New Jersey's Barnegat Bay to skim along the frozen surface at zooming speeds.

"It's like taking off in a jet plane. You get that rush. The boat just flies off the ice on you," Fred Harrigfeld Sr. said. "You can be going 25 mph and then the next minute you can be doing 50 mph."

And the feeling of roaring across the ice at speeds that can go as high as 70 m.p.h., iceboaters say it's addictive.

The ice, known as hard water, is currently six or seven inches thick and has been checked for safety. To get going, iceboaters take a running start and jump in the cockpit before steering with a tiller.

The videos below show iceboaters in past years in the Barnegat Bay off Lavellette.
