The Atlantic City Boardwalk is slated to get added security as funding for 230 surveillance cameras has been secured.
According to The Press of Atlantic City, the Casino Reinvestment Development Fund -- created to help save the city for financial woes -- has agreed to issue about $11 million in bonds to fund the installation of the cameras over the winter and spring.
The plan puts 60 cameras on poles where the beach entryways intersect with the Boardwalk and another set of cameras on poles that line the Boardwalk.
The aim is increased public safety, while allowing a company co-funding the project, NeXomedia, to use the camera footage “to gather demographic information about crowds and put that information to commercial use,” The Press reported.
NeXomedia currently runs digital ads on screens secured to Boardwalk poles and is helping to fund a larger picture project to bring more tourists to the city and Boardwalk with new LED lighting, Wi-Fi equipment and cellphone charging stations on the wooden walkway.
