A man was driving under the influence and without a valid license when he blew a red light and slammed into another car in Delaware Saturday night, killing an elderly woman, police say.
According to authorities, 76-year-old Melvin Kessler was driving wesbound on US Route 40 in Bear, with 69-year-old Phyllis Kessler in the car.
Travelling in a Pontiac GrandAm, he went to make a left turn onto US Route 1 when the light turned green.
Yet 30-year-old Cristobal Guzman-Martinez, driving a 2005 Ford Expedition going eastbound in the right lane of US Route 40, drove through a red light and slammed into Kessler's vehicle, sending it into the intersection, police say.
Phyllis Kessler, of Bear, was taken to Christiana Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Melvin Kessler, also of Bear, was taken there as well where he is listed in stable but critical condition.
Guzman-Martinez, of Wilmington, was not injured despite not being "properly restrained" in his vehicle, according to authorities.
He has been charged with second degree vehicular homicide, first degree vehicle assault, DUI, driving without a valid license and no proof of insurance.
Delaware State Police are still investigating the incident.
