An innocent bystander was attacked with a wrench in an unprovoked assault at Suburban Station early Tuesday morning, authorities say.

According to SEPTA, the incident occurred around 6 a.m. when the unidentified victim, a man in his late 50s, was standing and waiting to buy a ticket.

That's when another man -- who officials say appears to have no connection to the victim -- ran up and struck him in the head with a heavy wrench.

The victim fell to the ground and the suspect continued hitting him several times before police showed up moments later.

The suspect was arrested and charges are pending, SEPTA said. While officials would not identify the attacker, he is someone with a criminal history, a SEPTA spokesperson said.

The victim was taken to Hahnemann Hospital and was last listed in stable condition.

This is the second unprovoked attack at a SEPTA station in the past month. Earlier in January, a woman was shoved onto the tracks while waiting for a Market-Frankford Line train at 40th Street Station.
