Longwood Gardens to open Orchid Extravaganza

Display to feature 4,500 orchids

Orchids have been celebrated at Longwood Gardens since 1922, but never with such enthusiasm as during Orchid Extravaganza. More than 4,500 orchids will be on display.

There will be a 12-foot-tall archway, a purple curtain and giant orbs made from the flowers.

Visitors can see orchid displays in Longwood's Conservatory, the Peirce-du Pont House, the visitor center and other locations beginning Jan. 21.

Families who want to explore can attend OrKID Days, where kids can go on a Orchid Quest, watch a puppet show and enjoy interactive story telling.

This year, Orchid Extravaganza will be on display through March 31. Those who visit in the final month will have an opportunity to see rare sky-blue poppies in bloom, too.
