Mural Arts Program and Philadelphia Federal Credit Union have teamed up to commission a new mural in the East Kensington and Fishtown area as part of a two-year initiative. It all kicked off last week when they accepted submissions from neighborhood artists - those living or working in the area - for the new work.
After they sift through their many submissions, MAP and PFCU will choose three finalists this week who will then submit an original design for the mural. The designs of those finalists will be on display in a special exhibition at PFCU's Fishtown branch from Monday, Sept. 28, to Monday, Oct. 12. During that time, the public will vote on which work is brought to life via PFCU's Facebook page.
The winning design will be announced during the week of Monday, Oct. 19. The project will culminate in the big reveal of the mural at the Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby & Arts Festival in May 2016.
In addition to this commission and the voting process, the community will get involved in the project by participating in paint days during the winter and spring, where they will actually contribute to the winning design.
