A 24-year-old woman from New York who was visiting Long Beach Island for a wedding on Saturday died after being caught in an ocean rip current early that morning, NJ.com reports.
The victim, Kristi Pisano, of Port Chester, New York, reportedly “wasn’t a good swimmer,” though it was unbeknownst to her boyfriend, the brother of the bride, who was swimming with her on Saturday morning. The two hadn’t been dating very long, NJ.com reports.
Long Beach Township police officer Lt. Chuck Schnell told NJ.com that police were called to the 24th Street beach in the Spray Beach section of Long Beach Island at 11:12 a.m. on Saturday for a report of a swimmer in distress.
No lifeguards were on duty at the time since lifeguards officially started patrolling the beaches for the season on Sunday.
Witnesses attempted to perform CPR on Pisano before police arrived, and once on the scene, emergency responders attempted to use a defibrillator to revive her.
She was transported to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead at Penn Presbyterian at 1:24 a.m. Sunday.
