Security forces reported killing eight suicide bombers who were attempting to breach the Ayn al-Assad air base in Iraq Friday, where 350 U.S. troops are currently stationed while training Iraqi pilots, CNN reported.
Earlier Friday, ISIS militants had taken over full control of the Iraqi town of Al-Baghdadi, bringing them within a few miles of the Ayn al-Assad air base, security officials told CNN.
The U.S. defense official said the U.S. troops on the base … are not contemplating engaging ISIS on the ground, CNN reports.
The Iraqi forces have called for reinforcements, however a U.S. defense official told CNN that no evacuations have been planned from the base, adding that there is no direct threat to U.S. personnel.
