Over the next week, the East Coast is at risk of taking on quite a bit of water as Hurricane Joaquin starts heading north. It could potentially mean a change in scheduling for the Eagles and Washington Redskins.
The two NFC East rivals are supposed to kick off in Landover, Maryland at 1:00 p.m. Sunday. While forecasts are generally mixed on how much rain will actually fall in and around the DMV, the potential for a major storm is causing the NFL to at least discuss a contingency plan. From the Washington Post:
NFL officials are in discussions with representatives of the Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles about potential weather-related scheduling contingencies in case Hurricane Joaquin impacts the D.C. area this weekend.
“We are monitoring the forecast and having dialogue with both teams,” said Greg Aiello, the NFL’s senior vice president of communications.
According to The Post, Aiello didn’t mention any specifics about potential scheduling changes. By checking out the schedule, CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora makes a decent point about the teams’ shared bye week:
I would especially worry about the field condition in Washington after dealing with heavy rain. The grass at FedEx Field is generally thought to be one of the worst surfaces in the NFL.
