A runaway horse was fatally struck Monday by a car on a New Jersey highway, authorities announced.
New Jersey State Police said the crash occurred around 3 a.m. on the Atlantic City Expressway near milepost 32.1 in Winslow Township, Camden County.
Somehow, two horses were able to roam free on the highway until a car hit one near the right shoulder of the road. The horse was killed in the crash. Troopers responded to the incident and corraled the other horse, which was not injured.
The occupants of the vehicle sustained minor injuries, police said.
Investigators were able to locate the horses' owner but are still trying to determine how the animals wandered onto the highway.
