Weekend to bring extreme heat, precautions recommended

Dangerously hot and humid conditions are expected to last over the next two days.

According to the forecast from the National Weather Service, Friday afternoon thunderstorms will bring some mild relief.

In Philadelphia, the storms are expected to arrive after 2 p.m. and could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Similar storms are possible later Friday night. As much as an inch of rain is possible in some areas, but with the rain, the nighttime temperature will cool off to 74 degrees.

Saturday's high in the city will be near 90 degrees, and there is a 40 percent chance of rain or thunderstorms. Sunday's high temperature will reach 88, and it is expected to be mostly sunny.

The Camden County Health Office has issued a heat alert for both Friday and Saturday and is recommending its municipalities open the county's cooling stations.

In addition, the county is reminding its low-income, senior residents that they can take advantage of the offer to receive a free fan to help keep cool. Residents age 60 and older with an income of $25,000 or less are eligible to receive a fan at no cost. To request a fan or to obtain more information, please call the Camden County Division of Senior Services at (856) 858-3220.

The next two days are also considered "Ozone Active Days," which means the very young, very old and sick populations should take special care to keep cool.

Animals and children should also never be left in a vehicle unattended.
