Haddon Avenue in Camden – and its infrastructure – is being transformed from Vesper Boulevard to the Old White Horse Pike in the city.

The $4.4 million project includes $1.1 million in federal highway funding.

Haddon Avenue runs through the city travels southeast, connecting Camden to Collingswood, Haddon Township and Haddonfield in Camden County.

“This stretch of Haddon Avenue is a key gateway to Camden, and leads to one of the city’s most venerable institutions, Lourdes Health System, and soon to be one of the newest additions, Camden Prep,” said Camden County Freeholder Susan Shin Angulo.

Angulo serves as liaison to the Camden County Department of Public Works. Road improvements should “literally pave the way for future economic development,” she said.

The completed project will include reconstruction of the roadway, improved drainage, new traffic signals, accessibility for the disabled and decorative lighting.

Alexander J. Hatala, the president and CEO of Lourdes Health System, which has been on Haddon Avenue for 66 years, welcomed the upgrades.

The roadway work will also make Camden Prep, a Renaissance school in Camden, more accessible.

The county expects to complete work in January 2017, though the exact timeline could change due to weather and other factors.
