Police are investigating the drowning death of a 2-year-old New Jersey girl Monday night, NBC10 reports.
Authorities said the child went missing from a home along Bittern Road in Berkeley, Ocean County, around 8:30 p.m.
Officers searched the neighborhood and found the missing girl floating in the shallow end of a next door neighbor’s in-ground pool.
First responders were unable to resuscitate the girl, and she died less than an hour later at Community Medical Center in Toms River.
The Asbury Park Press reports investigators found evidence of drugs in the home of Brigitte McCarthy, 31, and Robert Trella, 41, the parents of victim Maddigan McCarthy.
Child protective services were notified, as there were two other children living in the home.
It was not immediately known whether any charges would be filed.
