Giant Food's first small-market concept grocery store in the U.S. will be opening in Philadelphia's Graduate Hospital neighborhood on Jan. 25.
The specialty Giant Heirloom Market, at 2303 Bainbridge St., was announced in fall. The grocery store part of the Carlisle-based company's effort to shift toward an urban shopping model. The trend has most visibly been led by Target, which has opened several small-format stores in Philadelphia over the past few years.

What makes the market unique is its selection of products based on community meetings and engagement with local residents. Giant plans to follow an "endless aisles" philosophy that will take product requests into account as it stocks the store.
The market will also include a range of products from local purveyors, including High Street on Market, Isgro Pastries, One Village Coffee, and Sarcone’s Bakery.
