A 39-year-old man was fatally shot by an armed security guard during a shootout at a gas station in Fairmount on Tuesday night, police said.

Police said the 39-year-old man brandished his weapon, prompting the security guard to fire in self-defense. They both were taken to Temple University Hospital for treatment for injuries from the shooting.
The 39-year-old died of gunshots to his face and torso, police said. He was pronounced dead at 7:20 p.m. The security guard, 30, was shot in the left thigh and is in stable condition.
The security guard works for the private security company Pennsylvania S.I.T.E. Agents and is licensed to carry a firearm, 6ABC reported. The Olney-based company told the station that the guard is a father of three and feared for his safety and the safety of others in the store.
Police said a stray bullet struck a second-floor bedroom window of a nearby home, but no injuries were reported. Police also said they believe the 39-year-old man owned a nearby food truck and frequented the gas station.
Authorities recovered multiple weapons at the scene but have not made any arrests.
