Former La Salle University and Philadelphia 76ers guard Doug Overton was arrested Sunday for exposing himself to people on a trail in Lower Merion.
The 47-year-old Overton, who is currently the head men’s basketball coach at Lincoln University (Pa.), was charged with one count of indecent exposure and disorderly conduct before being released on bail, according to court documents.
Here’s more on the incident, via Richard Ilgenfritz of The Delco Times:
According to police, officers received numerous calls shortly after noon Sunday that a man was exposing himself on the Cynwyd Trail. One of the callers told police the man appeared to be touching himself around his genitals. Another witness told police the man’s penis was outside of his pants and that he was continuously looking at a female in the area. The witnesses then told police he was seen walking on the trail with his penis exposed.
A male witness told police the subject was walking toward him with his penis fully out of his pants. He was described by the witness as walking “calmly and deliberately” and seemed to be aware that he was exposing himself but “seemed content with the situation,” police reported.
Police responded to the scene. Motorcycle patrol officers were able to locate the subject on the trail. The man was later identified as Overton, police reported. Three separate witnesses positively identified Overton as the man they saw on the trail exposing himself, police reported. [delcotimes.com]
Those who know Overton well, like his former college coach, are surprised, to say the least.
“That’s not the Doug Overton I know. That’s for sure,” said Speedy Morris, Overton’s coach at La Salle. “I’m shocked. Shocked.”
Morris, who also coached Overton’s son, Miles, at St. Joseph’s Prep, said that he hadn’t spoken with Doug Overton over the last couple of weeks but kept in contact with him and didn’t know of any problems in Overton’s life. He described Overton as a “phenomenal” player and person.
“It’s got me baffled,” Morris said. “It’s got me baffled.” [philly.com]
Overton, who still holds the Explorers’ career records for assists and steals and was inducted into the Big 5 Hall of Fame in 1997, played 11 NBA seasons after being selected in the second round of the 1991 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons. He played for eight different teams, including 94 games with the Sixers over parts of three different seasons.
Following his playing career, Overton spent time as an assistant coach for the Saint Joseph's Hawks and Brooklyn Nets – in addition to two seasons as a Sixers analyst on CSN Philly – before taking over at Lincoln University.
