Former Devil, Flyer Jim Dowd accused of assaulting teen hockey player

High-school coach allegedly kicked 16-year-old

Former Flyer Jim Dowd is under investigation for allegedly assaulting a teen hockey player, according to NJ.com.

The first-year boys ice hockey coach for Manasquan-Point Pleasant Beach is accused of kicking a 16-year-old player in the back during last Wednesday's game against Red Bank Regional at the Jersey Shore Arena in Wall.

According to the NJ.com story:

Dowd, who played parts of 17 NHL seasons with the New Jersey Devils, did not coach his team when it suffered an 11-3 loss to Rumson-Fair Haven on Monday night at the Red Bank Armory. Assistant coach Tom Matthews, who served as the head coach in Dowd's absence, declined comment after the game.

The team includes Dowd's son, Jim Jr., a freshman forward who is the second-leading scorer. The team has a 3-9 record after Monday's loss.

Wall police said the complaint against Dowd is under review. A News 12 New Jersey report said that Dowd is scheduled to appear in Wall Township court on Tuesday morning.

Dowd, a lifelong Brick resident, played the last season of his career with the Flyers.
