University of Pennsylvania students wearing fitness trackers may have been unknowingly dishing out data on their sleep habits.
According to Penn's student news organization, The Daily Pennsylvanian, the Fitness tracker company Jawbone (which is a device similar to Fitbit) recently published a report on sleep data collected from about 18,500 undergraduate students at 137 universities since 2013.
It's finding: Penn students go to bed really late (or early depending on how you’re looking at it.)
Of the colleges involved in the data analysis, The Daily Pennsylvanian reports Penn ranked second in the latest weekday bedtimes, with an average weekday bedtime of 1:22 a.m., surpassed only by Columbia University where the average student turns in for the night at 1:26 a.m.
As for hours slept, Penn kids ranked fourth, the data found, with an average weekday sleep time of 6.72 hours. The average weekday sleep time of all schools surveyed was 7.03 hours.
The Daily Pennsylvanian interviewed students on campus about what causes to their poor sleep habits. Rising Engineering sophomore Weiwei Meng reported a demanding academic workload played a part.
