As if there isn't enough chatter going around about FIFA with, you know, officials facing corruption charges and such, soccer fans are freaking out about something else.
In a historic first, EA Sports announced that its latest FIFA 16 video game will allow gamers to play as Women's National Teams. Players can choose from 12 teams: Germany, USA, France, Sweden, England, Brazil, Canada, Australia, Spain, China, Italy and Mexico.
EA Sports was able to develop authentic player models by capturing movements using 360-degree body scanning. American soccer player and Olympic gold medalist Alex Morgan is one of the players featured in the game.
"It is such an honor for women’s players and our team to be included in FIFA 16," Morgan told EA Sports. "I always wondered what it would be like to see our team in the game and it is very cool to know that it is now a reality."
Of course, there are mixed emotions among social media users.
Something EA Sports was sure to note: *Women's National Teams compete exclusively against other Women's National Teams.
The 2015 Women’s World Cup, which features a record field of 24 teams, begins June 6.
