Feds: Philly man stole retirement benefits intended for dead mother

A Philadelphia man was federally charged Wednesday with stealing retirement benefits intended for his deceased mother, U.S. Attorney Zane David Memeger announced.

Anthony Cooper, 67, was charged with theft of government funds for allegedly receiving $69,528 in retirement benefits from February 1991 until December 2011.

Cooper faces a statutory maximum prison sentence of 10 years, up to three years of supervised release and restitution, if convicted.

The Social Security Administration's Office of Inspector General investigated the case. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher E. Parisi is prosecuting it.
