February is heart month, a period dedicated to increased awareness of the risks of heart disease, the leading cause of death in the United States.
According to the latest statistics from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 600,000 Americans died from heart disease in 2013. That number is higher than the number who died from cancer, diabetes and stroke, to name a few of the country’s leading death-causing health conditions.

To draw added attention to the severe risks of heart disease, Britain’s National Health Service has created a new graphic, highlighted by Vox, that shows heart disease kills more people than war, murder and traffic accidents combined.
Similarly, circulatory and digestive disorders were found to be much more common causes of death than murders or car accidents.
As Vox pointed out, while this data comes from the United Kingdom, the leading health-related causes of death in the United States are sadly the same.
