Fairmount Avenue Arts Crawl celebrates local artists

Neighborhood spots become galleries, stages

Philadelphia’s Fairmount section was named for the prominent hill on which the Philadelphia Museum of Art now sits. Just steps from the renowned institutions that line the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, the neighborhood is home to charming houses, great restaurants and cafes, laid-back and fun bars, friendly residents and a massive prison-turned-attraction.

On April 30, the Fairmount Avenue Arts Crawl will kick off at noon. The annual event showcases local artists and performers in the neighborhood's streets, restaurants, businesses, shops and bars.

More than 25 popular Fairmount spots will act as venues, including Eastern State Penitentiary, The Belgian Cafe and Rybread.

In total, the arts fest includes close to 40 exhibits featuring painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture and mixed-media.

There won't just be art to look at, however. Arts Crawl attendees can take home one-of-a-kind goods. Vendors will be set up outside Eastern State selling jewelry, prints, soaps and other handmade items.

The day will also feature live performances. Listen to live music, attend a pottery-making demonstration, watch a mural being made, listen to poetry or join a dance class. For kids, there will be art-making stations around the neighborhood.
