The Eagles have given a contract extension to one of their tight ends for the second consecutive day. Yesterday, they signed Zach Ertz to a five-year contract extension worth $42.5 million. Today they reached a three-year agreement with Brent Celek worth $13 million, per Adam Caplan of ESPN:
Celek was originally scheduled to make $5 million in 2016, with no cap penalties if the Eagles cut or traded him. There was no way the Eagles were going to bring him back at $5 million. Instead, Celek took a pay cut and will remain with the team.
In 2015, Celek had 27 catches for 398 yards and three TDs. Ertz was a bigger threat in the passing game (75 catches, 853 yards in 2015), but Celek was clearly the best blocking tight end on the team.
The third tight end on the team is Trey Burton, who made the team as an undrafted free agent in 2014. It will be interesting to see if the Eagles try to convert him into a fullback under new head coach Doug Pederson.
