With their fifth-round pick (166th overall) in the 2017 NFL Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles selected West Virginia WR Shelton Gibson.
The Eagles traded back with the Tennessee Titans from pick No. 155 to pick No. 164. In the process they added the Titans' sixth-round pick (214th overall). They then traded pick 164 and pick 196 to the Miami Dolphins for picks 166 and 186.
Earlier in the draft, we showed fourth-round pick Mack Hollins' career 20.6 yards per catch average. Gibson is a big-time deep threat in his own right. Here are his numbers over the last two seasons:
Shelton Gibson | Rec | Yards | YPC | TD |
2015 | 37 | 887 | 24.0 | 9 |
2016 | 43 | 951 | 22.1 | 8 |
Gibson is a one-trick pony, but that's a pretty neat trick. NFL.com's Lance Zierlein is a fan:
Gibson has good size and is an all-day field stretcher with blazing speed to climb over the top of cornerbacks quickly and the ball skills to finish the catch. While his hands can be a little inconsistent underneath and his routes are underdeveloped, his size-speed combination will offer a team a homerun hitter who forces defenses to keep a safety shaded his way. Gibson could be a low-volume, high-impact starter fairly early in his career.
Watch this catch:
A season ago, the Eagles had nothing in the way of a receiver who could take the top off a defense. They now have free agent Torrey Smith, fourth-round pick Mack Hollins, and Gibson.
