Here's the Merriam-Webster dictionary definition of depressing:
Causing someone to feel sad or without hope.
Many Eagles fans would probably agree that the term applies to their team in some respects. After all, Philadelphia has never won a Super Bowl and has had a number of heart-breaking losses throughout the team's history.
However, are the Eagles the most depressing in the league? According to USA Today's FTW blog, yes.
Ranking the NFL's most soul-crushing squads, FTW ranked the birds first:
Eagles fans mistakenly believe they’re on the same level as current greats in New England, Green Bay and Denver and past champions such as the Redskins, Giants and 49ers. In fact, they are neither. They are ringless football fans who adore a movie about their city in which — how’s this for metaphorical? — their hero loses in the final fight.
There's some pretty flawed logic in that argument. First of all, most Eagles fans aren't naive enough to believe their team is on the same level as the Patriots, Packers, and Broncos when it comes to recent success.
Secondly, is Philadelphia, coming off two 10 win seasons, really any more sad or hopeless than a team that's had more starting quarterbacks since 1999 than current Republican presidential candidates, a once proud franchise now constantly rumored to be moving to Los Angeles, or a division rival almost guaranteed to be a dumpster fire this season?
Considering the intensity of the Philadelphia fanbase, this very easily could be a simple trolling attempt, akin to calling them the most hated in the league.
To be fair, at least the writers referenced Rocky and not snowballs.
