A man has died from injuries sustained earlier this month when a 50-pound dumbbell smashed through his windshield while he was driving along the New Jersey Turnpike, authorities said Wednesday.
New Jersey State Police said 75-year-old Jack DeCarlo, of Hamilton Township, died Tuesday night at Crozer-Chester Regional Medical Center, NJ.com reports.
On Jan. 9 around 7:15 a.m., DeCarlo was driving a GMC Terrain southbound with a female passenger in Oldsman Township, Salem County near milepost 6.6 on the turnpike when the dumbbell crashed through the windshield and struck him in the head. DeCarlo lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a ditch on the side of the road.
DeCarlo was airlifted to the Delaware County hospital for treatment. His passenger, 57-year-old Patricia DeCarlo, sustained only minor injuries.
Investigators are still trying to determine whether the dumbbell was intentionally dropped from an overpass.
