Kevin Brough, the 22-year-old sheriff's deputy stabbed Tuesday during a deadly confrontation in the Chester County Court House, is recovering.

Chester County Sheriff Carolyn Welsh on Wednesday said her officer is expected to be out the rest of the week and to begin rehabilitation of his left-hand. He was operated on overnight.

Brough is right-handed, so the injury is not expected to keep him from returning to full-duty, she added.

Brough was stabbed in the hand by Curtis W. Smith, who has had previous law enforcment problems, including jumping a White House security fence and a pending domestic charge.

Smith was shot dead in the lobby of the Chester County justice facility by another officer after he attacked Brough with a knife.

The county district attorney, Thomas Hogan, said findings in the attack will be released tomorrow.
