'The Comeuppance' brings laughter and reflection to The Wilma Theater

Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ dark comedy explores nostalgia, mortality, and fractured connections in the wake of the pandemic

Tony Award-winning playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ "The Comeuppance" is currently captivating audiences at The Wilma Theater. Running through December 8, this electrifying comedy is a meditation on impermanence, nostalgia, and isolation.

Set in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, this expertly balanced play weaves the levity of early aughts music, dancing and friendship into dark themes of grief, war, and mortality. The characters go in and out of enjoying each other's company and questioning their friendships, reunion attendance, and life choices.

Directed by Co-Artistic Director Morgan Green and featuring the Wilma’s HotHouse ensemble in collaboration with Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, The Comeuppance brings Jacobs-Jenkins’ signature wit and depth to a modern twist on the medieval danse macabre — or “dance of death.”
