Police Monday have identified the recreational basketball coach they say pulled a gun from his waistband and fired as he was heading toward a gym's exit Saturday causing spectators to scream and flee.

Police are looking for Maurice Tavares, 26, who is also known as Maurice Robinson, of the 2000 block of Harris Street in Chester County, officials said.

The police said Tavares was coaching a team playing against the Christy Park recreation center's basketball team at 728 S. 55th St. when, witnesses say, Tavares allegedly got in an argument with a spectator.  When the Christy coach went over to try and cool the exchange, Tavares started swearing at him, police said.

A spectator said something further to Tavares who allegedly replied with “shut up” before telling the Christy coach to go back to his side of the gym.

“At this point, [Tavares] started to walk backwards, reaching into his waistband area,” a statement from the police said. One shot was fired as the defendant left but no one was hit.

The police said that anyone with information on Tavares should call 215-686-3183.
