New Jersey Gov. Christie has been active lately in providing his takes on the sports world. Last week, he said the Philadelphia 76ers are doomed to continue their losing ways despite building a world-class practice complex in Camden. With the drama of the NFL Draft unfolding over the weekend, Christie couldn't contain himself from commenting on the plight of Ole Miss OT Laremy Tunsil, who fell to Miami with the 13th pick after a Twitter-leaked video showed him apparently smoking a bong through a gas mask.
On Friday, Christie appeared on the "Boomer and Carton" show on New York's WFAN to discuss the latest gridiron news, among other topics.
When asked about Tunsil's fall in the draft (he was originally projected as a top five pick before the leaks), Christie said he would have been harsh with the highly touted NFL prospect (skip to 7:15 to hear Christie's remarks on Tunsil).
“It’s unbelievable,” Christie said. “Because the bong hits aren’t enough. Give me the gas mask too. It’s incredible. I can’t take my eyes off it. It’s unbelievable. When I was a prosecutor, I would’ve gone in and cuffed this guy,” Christie said. “I would’ve been all over it.”
Christie, of course, is no longer a prosecutor. He is a governor in a state that (again) gave him his lowest approval rating to date last week at just 26 percent. It's a drop more precipitous than Tunsil's if you consider that 64 percent of New Jersey voters approved of him when he first took office in 2010.
But Christie also implied that on some level he felt for Tunsil, who will likely lose out on about $10 million as a result of his slide.
“Who’s the guy who hates him enough that they had access to that video and put it on?” Christie said. “I mean, wow.”
