Bottom Dollar Food has closed all of its stores, according to a posting on the discount grocer's website.
The chain's 66 stores in the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh regions were expected to close by Thursday.
The chain's parent company, the Belgian-based Delhaize Group, announced in November that it was selling those Bottom Dollar locations to Aldi Inc., another discount grocer based in Batavia, Illinois. The $15 million sale is expected to be finalized some time in the first quarter of this year.
Whether the closed stores will reopen as Aldi is not yet known. Aldi hasn't announced its intentions for the stores.
The closure particularly could affect Chester residents. When Bottom Dollar opened there last June, it marked the first time in more than a decade that the city had a commercial grocery store. Fair & Square, a nonprofit grocery store operated by Philabundance, remains open in the city.
