Among all the world's various desserts and delicacies that are impossible to avoid — cookies, ice cream, cake, baklava, scones, etc. — arguably none produce more tantalizing wafts than sticky buns. They're an efficient mall shopper's best worst nightmare and an elementary school kid's dietary downfall.
All the same, they're awesome, and on Thursday Chestnut Hill welcomed a brand a new family-owned bakery dedicated entirely to gourmet sticky buns and liege waffles.
Barry's Buns, located at 8229 Germantown Avenue, is a made-from-scratch operation that offers six sticky bun flavors (plus a seasonal flavor) and made-to-order liege waffles loaded with Belgian pearl sugar. Patrons can also top waffles with a selection of various sauces and fine powders.
The bakery, owned and run by Joel Singer and his wife Jen, comes with an impressive background. Joel, a graduate of Johnson and Wales University, earned his degree in baking and pastry arts and was most recently the Regional Bakery Associate Coordinator of Whole Foods Market for the Mid-Atlantic Region. He launched his career at the Pennsylvania Convention Center and once served as Assistant Pastry Chef at The Rittenhouse Hotel.
Barry's Buns welcomes walk-ins and also offers takeout, catering and outdoor seating. All baked goods are made with 100 percent natural ingredients such as butter, brown sugar, honey, cinnamon, and vanilla bean. There are no artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives.
Visitors are invited to stop by the Fareway for the Grand Opening Weekend. Hours will be Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
