After a spring of will-they-or-won't-they, The Awesome Fest announced earlier this month that the show will, in fact, go on. The summer outdoor culture festival, which has taken place each year since 2010, is embroiled in an ugly legal battle but for now the water seems calm enough to move forward.
The Awesome Fest will begin showing its free film screenings Friday, June 26 at 9 p.m. with the Philadelphia premiere of "Call Me Lucky," at Liberty Lands in Northern Liberties. The documentary by Bobcat Goldthwait tells the story of comic Barry Crimmins and was an official selection of the 2015 Sundance Film Festival.
Screenings will continue each Friday through August 14; all take place at 9 p.m. at Liberty Lands. The rest of the season's lineup include Sundance selection "Turbo Kid," South By Southwest selections "Uncle Kent 2" and "Deathgasm," and Cannes selection "Catch Me Daddy."
In recent years, Awesome Fest has included live music and filmmaker Q&A's, but it appears that so far the lineup is strictly films.
